C.A.R.P. DESIGN PRINCIPLES
The Importance of C.A.R.P. in Design
We have explored several important elements to Graphic Design but the following four fundamentals are arguably the most important:
C- contrast
A- alignment
R- repetition
P- proximity
Here is an example of how a design uses C.A.R.P. and watch this video!

3- DAY DESIGN CHALLENGE: DUE NOV 7
Using what you have just learned about C.A.R.P. principles of design, create 4 design possibilities using one image and a text of choice.
You will have 3 classes to complete this challenge - must be handed in on NOV 7
- Source a large, detailed image at high resolution.
- Find a short, interesting text to pair with the image.
- Working in an 8-x-8-inch square, isolate part of the image and combine it with the text.
- The text and image should be on more or less equal grounds, one illuminating and supporting the other. The text is not simply a caption for the image, but an active element and focal point. Use the image to bring attention to the text, and vice versa. Ask questions as you work: Is the picture flat or three-dimensional? How does it look upside down? How can lines, shapes, and planes in the image suggest ways to position and align the text?
- Once you have completed your 4 different possibilities (each an 8x8in square), combine them into one image in Photoshop (see example below).
- Hand in: JPG and a WORD document with your image source as well as your text source.
- MAKE SURE YOUR NAME IS ON BOTH DOCUMENTS!!
You will have 3 classes to complete this challenge - must be handed in on NOV 7
