WHAT IS SURREALISM?
The Surrealist Movement in art sought to move away from realistic imagery and channel the power of imagination. Surrealism is an art style in which dreams, fantasy, and the sub-conscious inspired artists. Unrelated objects and or situations are often set in unnatural surroundings.
WHAT IS COLLAGE?
A collage is a work of art by traditionally gluing pieces of paper, photographs, scraps or other materials to create an image. Many surrealist artist use collage to create their images, which included elements of fantasy.
As you develop and hone your skill in realism, you will find it easier to abstract and combine pieces of what is real to create new inventions that are generated from within your mind.

QUESTIONS OF INQUIRY:
- How would you depict a dream (or part of one) as an inner reflection?
- What familiar objects or events can become symbols in your dreams?
- How would you interpret a symbol in your dream as a reflection of something in your waking life?
- What do you think your dream life can reveal to you about your conscious life?
- Can Popular Culture (media, magazines, movies) affect our subconscious?
- Is a dream an escape from reality or reality itself?
The Process..
- Conceptual development: create 3 different conceptual sketches of surreal imagery, using at least 3-4 surrealist principles (also think of: Mythological creatures, abnormal size animals, portals to other dimensions, solids that behave like liquids, objects that defy gravity, staircases that lead to nowhere, something that transforms into something else, objects that are meant for outdoors are indoors, things that are the wrong size, illogical)
- Choose ONE of your sketches to base your collage on
- Source images online and/or draw your own images that you would like to use
- Using the Photoshop techniques that you have learned, piece together your collage

- Surrealist principles
- Cohesive image - all objects/images work together and not just randomly placed - think THEME
- A background
- Collage images MUST be well cut-out, blended - does not look like a cut and paste job
