Hand-Lettered GIFS
FOLLOW ALONG WITH MY DEMO SO THAT THE FOLLOWING STEPS MAKE SENSE!!!
DEMO: Monday Nov 19
STEP 1: DRAWING
1. Find a short saying/fun quote to use
2. Draw your original words on white paper using pencil
3. Use a black fine liner to make four dots on each corner around your words
4. On tracing paper, trace the four dots as well as your words
5. Repeat this 4 more times
6. Take a photo of each drawing - be sure that the lighting is nice and bright, no shadows, same angle for all 5 images
7. Or you can scan into the computer
STEP 2: ALIGNING IN PHOTOSHOP
1. Open one image in PS
2. Duplicate the background layer (so it becomes layer 0)
-Add a NEW FILL LAYER in white (ffffff) and move it to the bottom of your layers
- Add a new layer and embed the next drawing
3. Do this for all of your drawings until you have 5 additional layers
4. Rotate each drawing so that they are facing forward
5. Change the blending mode on the top layer to difference. Align all of the images, one by one - use DISTORT to help align all of the dots
- remember to change the blending mode back to NORMAL
6. Select all - Use auto-align to align all of your images
7. Select all - CROP your images to the same size, getting rid of any extra "information" on the edges 800px by 600px at 72 DPI
STEP 3: ADJUSTING, CLEANING UP, COLOURING
1. Add a CURVES adjustment layer to the top of all of your layers. Get the white to be as bright as possible and the black to be as dark as possible
2. Go onto each layer and erase out the 4 dots in the corners. Erase any "spots" on other areas
3. Add a GRADIENT map adjustment layer to the top of your layers. Double click on the gradient to choose your colours.
STEP 4: ANIMATE
1. Select the top layer
2. Go to WINDOW-->TIMELINE , be sure to choose CREATE FRAME ANIMATION on the bottom
3. Change the frame animation to 0.2 seconds and loop FOREVER
4. Select the next layer down and hide the other layers, choose new frame
5. Repeat step 4 until all of your 5 layers are included in the frames
6. PLAY
7. EXPORT--> SAVE FOR WEB (LEGACY) --> PRESET: GIF 128 DITHERED --> SAVE
8. Check that your GIF plays correctly when you open it outside of PS
