In December 2015, Steve Harvey was hosting the Miss Universe pageant and announced the wrong winner. He proceeded to correct his error while speculation soared. As usual, the public wanted a scapegoat, Steve owned up to the mistake but an error still happened. What was the real problem?

The actual elimination card design is in the picture above.
It would be easy to point fingers at the host and ignore the real issue—the wrong person was announced as winner. Though it may have made the show more exciting, it was an embarrassing error. The elimination card and bad design have been identified as possible culprits. At first glance one may judge this as perfectly obvious, but if put in context in the heat of the moment with millions of viewers, the result may change. (www.aiga.org)

Partner up with one other classmate to work on this design problem.
1. DEFINE THE PROBLEM: Working with your partner:
- Define what potential problems there are in the design of the elimination card above.
- Find the spelling error on the card.
- Do you think Steve Harvey was set up to fail with the design of that card?
- Take notes or type your findings into a word document. Be sure to use visual language terms that we have learned (some terms are listed below).
2. FIND A SOLUTION: With your partner:
- Come up with 3 different design solutions for a new elimination card that uses the same information as the original Miss Universe card above from 2015.
- Card size can by 5x7 inches
- Each of the 3 new designs must be different. You can use colour and other design elements as well, but keep it simple. Remember the context, someone will be reading it in front of millions of viewers.
3. PRESENT YOUR SOLUTIONS: To the class:
- You will present your findings to the class in a PowerPoint, Prezi, or another visual format that can be projected onto the screen.
- Include in your presentation:
- what problems you found in the original elimination card
- how/why these problems affected Steve Harvey when he was reading it
- your 3 new designs
- how/why these designs are improvements from the original elimination card
- your overall thoughts on designing to help someone be successful
- Your presentations will be 5 minutes maximum.
- Both partners must speak during the presentation.
- BE CREATIVE!
