To gain a greater understanding and appreciation of the No. 2 Pencil, we will watch the film, No. 2: Story of the Pencil, together as a class: "No.2, overlooked as a common tool, continues to lose dominance in a media saturated world. However, history tells a different story."
DESIGN CHALLENGE: NO. 2 PENCILS - TRANSFORMATION
DUE APR 12
Objective: explore an object that is used every day, but that usually goes unnoticed: the Pencil.
You have been hired to elevate a MUNDANE object to make it EXTRAORDINARY. Why? Because the pencil does fantastic things. It is used to write your notes, brainstorm your ideas, doodle pictures in class, and do beautiful drawings, and yet it gets no attention. You are going to give pencils some consideration by studying them, and then completely transforming them in a cool new way using the No. 2’s signature yellow colour, black lettering and pink eraser.
Process: **this project is a drawing on paper**

You have been hired to elevate a MUNDANE object to make it EXTRAORDINARY. Why? Because the pencil does fantastic things. It is used to write your notes, brainstorm your ideas, doodle pictures in class, and do beautiful drawings, and yet it gets no attention. You are going to give pencils some consideration by studying them, and then completely transforming them in a cool new way using the No. 2’s signature yellow colour, black lettering and pink eraser.
Process: **this project is a drawing on paper**
- Study the pencil: notice the ridges, lines, eraser size, aluminum, wood texture, graphite tip, and lettering.
- Brainstorm a subject for your drawing in your sketchbook, such as: cars, insects, people, sports, musical instruments, objects, etc.
- Follow the DESIGN PROCESS: create THUMBNAIL SKETCHES to help you plan the proportions accurately, do a few ROUGH copies, and finally complete a COMPREHENSIVE DESIGN.
- Create a contour LINE drawing in pencil first, and then fill in the inside space of the drawing with pencils.
- Pay attention to space: the drawing MUST fill up the majority of the page!
- Try STRETCHING, CONDENSING, CURVING, and DISTORTING the pencil shape to make your drawing interesting and unique.
- Use pencil crayons to colour the final image and lastly fine tip black markers to do the LINES.
- Take risks, challenge yourself and have fun!
- Drawing must be scanned and handed in digitally as a JPG. *Also hand in your paper copy*
