Watercolour Recipe Illustration                             Due May 29

This project will be in 2 parts:
- hand drawn illustration and watercolour painting
- then digitizing and adding text in PS

1. SKETCHBOOK: GATHERING INFORMATION

  1. Choose a recipe
  2. Consider how many "parts" the recipe has - divide your paper into that amount of parts
  3. Write down the ingredients into the proper "parts"
  4. Next to the ingredients, draw examples of what that ingredient can look like
  5. Write down KEY steps in the recipe and things you will need (ie. pot or pan, mixer, stove, fridge, blender, spatula, etc)
  6. Next to these items, draw examples of what the item can look like
  7. Choose your favourite example of each ingredient and item to use in a rough draft
  8. Your title for your recipe must be hand-lettered - do a couple of roughs on how you want that to look
  9. Show to Ms. S for approval

Examples  below:

2. GOOD COPY

  1. On good copy watercolour paper (get it from me), draw your ingredients and items on the page
  2. Watercolour your drawings and let it dry
  3. Fine line in black (if wanted but not necessary)
  4. Scan your paper into the computer

3. PHOTOSHOP - STEPS TO FOLLOW...

  1. Open your scanned document in Photoshop
  2. DUPLICATE the background layer and make a background copy. HIDE the original background layer
  3. Using the MAGIC WAND, select the white space on your document and press DELETE (this will place all of your images on a transparent background)
  4. Choose any selection tool (lasso, rectangle marquee) and select one of your images
  5. RIGHT click on the selection and choose LAYER VIA COPY
  6. Hide your background layer and check your new image layer to make sure that there are no other areas that need to be deleted in it
  7. Rename the layer for the object/ingredient that it is
  8. Repeat steps 3-7 until you have all of your images cut out into new layers

4. PUTTING YOUR RECIPE TOGETHER

  1. Open a new document 11x17 (horizontal or vertical is up to you)
  2. Drag your watercolour items from the layers in the previous document into the new document
  3. Using your knowledge of font, pairing, alignment, contrast and repetition - write the steps (point form) and ingredients next to/under/over the drawings
  4. You can include little illustrations of arrows and other smaller doodles to "fill up" some of the empty space - use the drawing tablets or brush tool in Photoshop
  5. Things like paint splatter look good as well - you can search for "free to use PNG paint splatter" or watercolour splashes to use as well
  6. Don't forget to include your recipe title!
